What to Wear for Your Photoshoot

A Photographer’s Guide to Looking Confident and On-Brand

If you’ve ever stood in front of your closet the night before a photoshoot and thought, “What on earth do I wear?” — you’re not alone. Whether you’re a business owner, creative, or professional getting new headshots, choosing the right outfits makes a huge difference in how confident and polished you’ll feel in front of the camera.

After 20+ years of photographing business leaders, entrepreneurs, and creatives across the Southeast, here’s what I’ve learned about dressing for your branding photoshoot.

1. Dress Like the Best Version of You.

You don’t have to be fancy. You just need to feel confident.

Think elevated—not uncomfortable. Choose pieces that make you feel like you, but pulled together. If you’d wear it to a client meeting or speaking event, it’ll probably photograph well.

2. Keep it Classic with a Splash of Personality

Timeless pieces in solid colors photograph best, especially for clean, professional branding.

Add interest with layers, texture (think knits, linen, denim), or accessories that feel aligned with your brand.

3. Avoid Distracting Patterns or Logos

Stay away from bold stripes, tiny busy prints, or clothes with logos. They tend to date photos quickly and draw the eye away from your face.

4.

Think in “Looks,” Not Just Outfits

If we’re doing a full branding session, plan 2–3 outfits that give us variety.

Try something business casual, something elevated, and one that feels a little more lifestyle or relaxed (especially if you’re a creative or personal brand).

5. Coordinate, Don’t Match (for Teams)

For group or team photos, go for a coordinated color palette rather than everyone wearing the same thing.

Neutrals, soft blues, or earth tones tend to look sharp without being overpowering.
